Latest trend: dog and cat food based on human food.
Pet food brands in the popular human class space are likely to reap many rewards from loyal consumers, but may have encountered some hurdles in achieving market success. For brands considering entering the human quality category, it pays to be aware of the most common challenges and how to avoid or overcome potential stumbling blocks.
Those can include higher costs, limited supplies of certain ingredients, reduced palatability, dramatically increased paperwork, manufacturing challenges, export issues and regulatory complexity.
Human-grade pet food labeling full of pitfalls
As some pet owners look for pet foods that are closer to what they eat themselves, human quality can lead to market success and increased sales. But first, a manufacturer must overcome some of the challenges of getting to the market with products that are palatable to both the pet and the owner's wallet, while also ensuring profits for the company.
That means taking into account the increased costs of ensuring a stable supply of ingredients, possibly changing processing parameters, completing all necessary documentation and complying with labeling and other regulations.
Human degree is an all or nothing statement, there is no middle ground
Most countries require an affidavit certifying everything in the food of human quality, plus another affidavit on certain aspects of transportation, storage.
Place a mark the statement of intended use immediately next to the first use of the claim "human quality", making sure that the text used for the claim does not exceed the statement of intended use. The label must bear a statement "not for human consumption"; at the same time, you should avoid including any declarations of quality or quality in the ingredient list.
AAFCO Update on Human Grade Pet Food Guidelines
The revised guidelines created a pathway for products to be certified clearly. AAFCO has yet to draw up new guidelines on this.
Still opportunities to grow the human quality category
Despite the challenges of developing and marketing human-grade pet foods, it still has opportunities to expand import and export capabilities and increase purchasing choices for consumers, including cat owners or owners wishing to feed human-grade pet food mixes at home.
We at Champ Dogfood believe that you should especially look at how food is digested in dogs and cats. This is different from humans. The extensive range of articles available on the current market should be sufficient. So the only reason you want this trend are marketing driven reasons. We think this is unwise, only the well-being of your dog and cat should be leading.
